Shrimpfest underway

The Seadrift Chamber of Commerce Shrimpfest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday and continues through 1 a.m. Sunday.

The American Legion Post 167 officially opened the Shrimpfest at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The beauty pageant followed at 10 a.m. at which time booths opened for business.

A variety of events are planned for the enjoyment of children including the Waterslide, Moonwalk, pony rides, a petting zoo, a paint ball booth and a fishing tournament.

There will be 23 different food booths. There will be about 11 arts and crafts booths.


There will also be information booths like the U.S. Navy recruiters booth, 4-H Club booth, Victoria College will have information at a booth for upcoming students and Texas Parks and Wildlife will have a booth.

There will be several Coastal Expo booths exhibiting marine critters.

Port O’Connor will sponsor a booth and the Port Lavaca Rotary.

The eighth grade students at Seadrift will be sponsoring a fundraiser booth for their annual summer trip. The Travis Middle School cheerleaders will have a booth.

Calhoun County Senior Citizens will sell baked goods.

The Seadrift Band drum line will perform at 1 p.m. Friday.


There will be kids karaoke at 4 p.m. Friday.

Junior and the Highlights will perform Friday night sponsored by Del Pappa Beer Co.

The Memorial High School Mariachi Serpientes De Oro of Victoria will perform from 6-8 p.m. Friday. They are being sponsored by Gonzales Restaurant of Placedo.

Early Saturday morning there will be a motorcycle Poker Run. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. It will be followed by a K-Fun Run and Walk at 8:30 a.m.

The kids fishing and crabbing tournament will be from 8-10 a.m. Saturday.

The gumbo cookoff is at 10 a.m.

Adult karaoke is at 1 p.m. Saturday. It will be followed by a shrimp eating contest at 2 p.m.

The American Rock Legends, a tribute band playing the music of Elvis Presley, the Blues Brothers and many other well-known ‘oldies’ bands, takes the stage from 3-7 p.m.

There will be a live remote broadcast with radio station 104.7 from 6-8 p.m.

The annual Ms. Bayrat Contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

The festival will close with a dance from 9 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday. The public will dance to the tunes of a local group, Country Crossin.

Beer gardens will be set up at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and stay a while.

The Shrimpfest is sponsored annually to raise seed money to match a grant for a fishing pier, to raise funds for scholarships and other local activities.
