Sales tax holiday changed
Texas Sales Tax Holiday Period Changed to August 17-19
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced that recently passed legislation has changed the dates for the annual three-day Texas sales tax holiday on clothing and footwear to begin on the third Friday in August.
It will now occur on Aug.17-19, rather than Aug. 3-5.
In addition, backpacks under $100 used by elementary and secondary students have been added to the list of exempt items.
During the sales tax holiday, clothing and footwear priced under $100 will be exempt from state and local sales tax. The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.
Other items to be exempt from sales include baby clothes, belts with attached buckles, cowboy and hiking boots; baseball, fishing, golf and knitted caps; coats and wraps, adult and baby diapers, dresses, gloves, gym suits and uniforms, hooded shirts and hooded sweatshirts, hosiery, jackets, jeans, baseball and football jerseys, jogging apparel, neckwear and ties, pajamas, pants and trousers, raincoats and ponchos, robes, shirts, shoes such as sandals, slippers, sneakers, tennis and walking shoes; socks including athletic, shorts, suits, slacks and jackets; sweatshirts and sweat suits; sweaters, swimsuits, underclothes, work clothes and uniforms.
