Port Lavaca firemen battled two house fires in sweltering 90- degree weather Friday afternoon.

In both instances the culprit of both fires was cook stoves.

Port Lavaca was called to the scene of a structure fire on the 300 block of Sand Dollar at 12:43 p.m. Friday.

“Once on the scene the fire crews made a quick attack and knock down,” said Fire Chief Brandon Bancroft. “Fire was confined to the kitchen and smoke/heat damage was throughout the structure.

Fire Marshal Rob Thigpen determined the cause of the fire was a cook stove left unattended “in the on position.”

Bancroft said there were no reports of injuries and the residents were out of the home.

Twenty-six minutes later, at 1:06 p.m. Friday, the fire department was called across town to another structure fire on the 500 block of Tommy Drive.

“Once on the scene fire crews used forcible entry tactics and made entry into the residence,” Bancroft said. “After a quick attack and knock down this fire was also confined to the kitchen and adjoining room.”

Fire Marshal Thigpen determined this fire also was caused by a cook stove left unattended in the on position.

Bancroft said there was heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the entire house but fortunately no report of injuries.

The Point Comfort Volunteer Fire Department assisted the Port Lavaca Fire Department with manpower at the Tommy Drive fire. The Magnolia Beach Volunteer Fire Department along with the Port O’Connor Volunteer Fire Department and Port Alto Volunteer Fire Department staffed the city stations.

Calhoun County Emergency Medical Service assisted at both locations with rehabilitation due to the heat.
