Port O’Connor welcomes Warriors and families

Port O’Connor residents will be hosting the second annual Warrior’s Weekend Friday and Saturday.

About 250 soldiers of which 150 are wounded are expected with their families and caregivers.

With the troops, family members and caregivers and area residents supporting the troops, Carl Bludau, one of the organizers of the event, estimates 2,000 to 3,000 people in Port O’Connor.

Bludau is a Vietnam Conflict veteran.

“I was in a hospital at Brook Army Center for six months,” he said. “I was a radio operator for the company commandeering the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. I would have done anything to be able to help and witness what we are being able to see this weekend. Patriotism is supporting our troops. It is more than wearing a ball cap, a shirt or magnetic sign on your vehicle. God has blessed us so much to have these types of people committed to serve us.”

The 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (505th PIR) is one of four infantry regiments of the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army.

The family-oriented event at Port O’Connor is designed to help wounded soldiers and their families participate in a day of activities designed to take their minds off the grueling rehabilitation and struggles of their daily lives.

Check-in for overnight guests will be from 2-4 p.m. Friday when the set up for displays at the community center will take place. There will be a reception at the community center for the overnight wounded from 4-7 p.m. Friday.

Breakfast will be served from 7-8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The troops will arrive Saturday from 9:30-10 a.m. at Froggie’s Bait Dock by chartered busses from Brooke Army Medical Center.

The troops and guests will board boats to go fishing between 10-11 a.m. There is an AH-64 Apache helicopter Fly Over scheduled. It will land at the community center along with a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter for static display.

From 2-4 p.m. Saturday boats will arrive at Froggie’s where fish will be weighed and cleaned. The troops will be transported to the community center for snacks and entertainment.

At 5:30 p.m. the 82nd Airborne Division will execute an All American freefall team jump from the Black Hawk helicopter.

A barbecue dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 6-7 p.m. A country western band concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. The troops return to Brooke Army Medical Center at 9 p.m.

There will be private vendors where you can buy food and drinks at the site.
