Yes, it’s official!
For over a week the rumor has swirled around town that the 2008 Sandcrabs had been placed in the top ten 4A teams in Texas by football icon Dave Campbell.
For once anyway, the rumors are in fact true. An early perusal of Campbell’s annual publication “Texas Football” (which officially hits the new sstands Monday) finds the Calhoun bunch listed seventh in the preseason rankings.
The news comes at just the right time as Dave Campbell, yes, the man himself will be at Red Hummingbird Photography (located at 202 E. Main Street) on Wednesday, June 18 to sign copies of “Texas Football” and meet Sandcrab fans from 5:30 to 7:30. Campbell has donated several hundred copies of the magazine to Calhoun and all proceeds from the sale of the magazines will go to Calhoun athletics.
The afternoon is shaping up to be quite a party. It will be a great time to meet and talk with players and other fans. Between 5 and 8 p.m. Main Street will be closed from Virginia St. to Guadalupe Street, and Colorado closed from Live Oak to Railroad to make room for the affair.
Coach Richard Whitaker and his staff, the football team, cheerleaders and Sandettes will all be there to cheer the Sandcrabs as they begin preparations for an opening date in the Texas Football Classic. In the unlikely event of rain, the festivities will move to the Bauer Center.
The Texas Football Classic kicks off the 2008 season and an invitation to play in this annual event is a huge honor. Calhoun will play Mercedes Saturday, Aug. 30 in San Antonio at the Alamodome. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. The ’Crabs were given an allotment of 3,500 reserved seating tickets for the game and as in the case of Campbell’s generous donation of his magazines, all proceeds from the sale of these tickets go to Calhoun athletics. Over half of the reserved seats have already been sold, and great seats are still available and will be for sale at the event next Wednesday. The event is also the perfect opportunity to register for a chance to win four game tickets and a two-night hotel stay as part of the Port Lavaca Wave “Got Tickets?” promotion.
The emergence of the Calhoun Sandcrabs as a legitimate contender is something about which to cheer and something to savor.
Campbell writes, ”That Calhoun is ranked at all might cause some South Texas old-timers to drop this magazine in shock. But after enduring a playoff drought dating back to the 1961 season, Calhoun has made to postseason in two consecutive seasons.”
It was not all that long ago that folks around town knocked around the idea of changing the team mascot to something like the “Calhoun Hurricanes.” Now such an utterance would be met with at least a raised eyebrow if not outright contempt. There is a lot of pride hereabouts in being a Sandcrab.
The party begins Wednesday, June 18 at the intersection of Main Street and Colorado. Everyone who is anyone will be there and you would not want to miss an opportunity to shake hands with a Texas football legend.
You know what they say, “There ain’t no party like a Sandcrab party ‘cause the party never stops.
See you there.
