Trustees of the Calhoun County Independent School District took part in a moveable meeting Thursday, and one of them moved right on off the board.

The school board, Superintendent Larry Nichols and several staff members visited construction projects at Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary and Calhoun High for about two hours, using one of two new air-conditioned school buses purchased this year.

“Both projects are on time and within budget,” Nichols said.

At JR, the visitors walked on pre-cast slabs where a new cafeteria will be built and along new hallways, some of which will be connected to the part of the old school that will be retained. When completed, potentially in the fall of 2009, about 85 percent of the school will be new.

Three wings for classrooms and the cafeteria are to be ready for use in October 2008, when every member of the staff will change locations. The campus will be split in two, with construction and demolition going on between the two sections of classrooms. Prime Contractors Inc. of Houston is working seven days a week, 10 hours a day (with some breaks when testing is being conducted) on the job.

At the high school the board members saw progress in the large weight building, where floor matting is on hand for installation, and the academic wing to be used by freshmen. The addition to the high school has some of its hurricane-proof windows installed, tiles in restrooms, and basic work done on a 1,200-square foot biology lab and 1,000-square-foot computer lab, along with other classrooms. Weaver & Jacobs Construction Inc. of Cuero, the contractor on the job, expects the wing’s air-conditioning work will be finished in about two weeks. The completion goal is Aug. 11 and furniture is to be moved in Aug. 14.

Representatives of SHW Group of Houston, architect for both projects, provided details of the work to board members.

The board returned to its meeting room for its agenda business, which was followed by a 45-minute executive session. After the closed session, the board accepted the resignation of Trustee Randy Maddux of Seadrift and presented him with a plaque recognizing service from 2002 to 2008.

Asked why he was giving up the post, Maddux would only say “personal reasons.” After the meeting was adjourned he asked board members to consider Jason Amason, an air-conditioning contractor, as a replacement. The next election for the position is to be in May 2009.

In other action, trustees:

  • Heard Nichols report “Our budget is bleaker than in the past.” They discussed a tax increase and changes in health insurance benefits with more consideration scheduled for their July 14 meeting.

  • Agreed to pay lawyer Rolando Rios of San Antonio $16,500 to work with the 2010 census and redraw election district lines for elections in 2011.

  • Accepted a grant from Earl C. Sams Foundation of Corpus Christi of $89,000 for playground renovation at Port O’Connor Elementary.

  • Agreed to spend $86,900 for televisions and computers for the new freshman wing at Calhoun High.

  • Approved acceptance of a Texas Educator Excellence Grant of $1,000 for each teacher at JR Elementary, to be distributed in October. TAKS scores and professional development determined the awards.

  • Authorized a health technology course called pharmacology for the next two years at the high school.
