The mother of two children was arrested by Port Lavaca police Monday for leaving one of the children, age three, in a vehicle in 90-degree temperature.

After locating the mother, police learned the child was put in the vehicle because she was crying in the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) office, according to Police Chief John Stewart.

Stewart said Sgt. Colin Rangnow was sent to the WIC office to investigate an unattended child left in a vehicle. On arrival he located a brown Chevrolet Tahoe and observed a small female child in the vehicle.

“He advised the child was in distress, screaming and drenched with perspiration,” Stewart said. “The driver side window was down about one- inch but all other windows were rolled up. Unable to get into the vehicle, Sergeant Rangnow went into the office and was able to locate the mother of the child identified as Xiomara Libeth Montiel age 29 of Port Lavaca. She had another child with her.”

The three year old child was removed from the vehicle.

“The mother put her in the vehicle alone for ten to fifteen minutes before officers arrived,” Stewart said. “The outside temperature was in excess of 90 degrees at the time the child was removed.”

Montiel was placed under arrest for child endangerment and transported to the Calhoun County Jail.

Both children were released to the grandmother after discussion with Child Protective Services.

The mother was placed in the county jail under a $5,000 bond.
