A walk along the shore

As most Calhoun County residents spent the afternoon securing homes, stocking up on groceries and filling their gas tanks before heeding a mandatory evacuation order and heading out of town, Joann Machacek and Shannon Wagner took the opportunity to enjoy a virtually deserted Lighthouse Beach save for the remote broadcast units staged at one end of the park.
With bare feet and an iced drink in one hand, the women walked along the shore, one occasionally using a foot to splash a little water on the other.
Machacek and Wagner said they had no plans to leave Calhoun County at this time.
“We have some time off and I said, ‘Hey, let’s go to the beach. No one will be there,’” Machacek said.
“My children are at their father’s,” Wagner said. “I have never been to the beach, so I was game. I even called my kids and told them where I was.”
Wagner, a mother of five, has lived in Port Lavaca for almost a year; Machacek has been in town just three weeks. Both women are formerly of Moulton.
