I Want to Know: Why is the causeway bridge not cleaned?

Question: I would like to know why our Causeway Bridge between Port Lavaca and Point Comfort  never gets cleaned up. I know it is too dangerous for the crew to do this during the day because of heavy traffic, but could not a crew do this some night when there is not a lot of traffic on bridge around maybe say two o’clock in the morning?

There is all kinds of trash along the road. Smashed five gallon buckets, tire treads,  dead birds, carpet, etc. Sometimes you have to dodge stuff to avoid hitting it. Most of it is beside the bridge barriers where it can’t go in the water. I think some one needs to clean this trash up ever so often.

Answer: Wesley Abraham, maintenance foreman for the Port Lavaca Texas Department of Transportation office said it is not true that the causeway bridge never gets cleaned up. He said hazardous items are cleaned up immediately but admits other items are seldom cleaned up. In fact, he could not remember the last time “there was a brooming.”

“I do stop and pick up hazardous items I see when driving across the Causeway Bridge,” Abraham said.

Abraham said it would be very difficult to have a crew working during slow traffic times like early in the morning. “We have no one working at that time,” he said. “We are shorthanded. We don’t do other things on the road that need it.”

He said often when TxDOT chooses what it will do on the road it rejects whatever is the lesser of two evils.

Abraham was asked if TxDOT could use a crew of inmates from the county jail to clean up the causeway bridge. He replied that inmates could not be used for that purpose because it is too hazardous.

Abraham noted that there is a law that addresses littering. Joking he said the litterbugs when caught should be made to clean up the causeway bridge on weekends.

On the serious side, Abraham said that it is very dangerous to clean a causeway bridge with a 55 mph speed limit. He noted that there have been accidents when the sheriff office and Department of Public Safety are working traffic accidents. He said when the causeway is “broomed” it requires a truck with crash equipment and another truck must be driving in front of the truck during the clean up.
