SEADRIFT – Complaints about six dilapidated houses moved into town from Victoria were heard Tuesday night by the Seadrift City Council.

The small houses were lined up on an unpaved lane off Fourth Street north of Hwy. 185.

“You’re supposed to be helping improve the city, long-time resident Bootsie Gill told the council.

There is no ordinance that says they can’t move them in,” Mayor Elmer DeForest responded.

“We have an ordinance for nuisances,” City Attorney John Griffin said. “Nobody has an interest in having nuisance homes.”

The council scheduled a workshop for 6 p.m. Monday (Nov. 10) to discuss building codes and standards, repair or replacement of the bay front pavilion and the possibility of building a new pier.

The council also held a lengthy closed executive session, but took no action afterward.

Council members approved payment of $189,000 to Crostex Construction Co. for construction of water and sewer lines. Engineer David Sheblak said all water lines in the project have been installed, tie-ins were nearing completion and sewer lines were being tested.

Final cleanup and inspection is expected before final payment on the $207,220 contract is considered next month. The work is being paid for with a Texas Community Development grant.

A grant from the Johnson Foundation of Victoria for $25,600 was announced by Chief Peter DeForest of the Volunteer Fire Department. Along with $2,000 in local matching funds, two new stalls for trucks will be added to the fire department building.

Council members also voted to require payment in advance for annual leases of the 104 single stalls and commercial dock spaces at the city harbor.

Paula Moncrief, representing the Chamber of Commerce, presented two $2,000 checks as donations to the city for pier and pavilion construction.

The council approved closing part of Main Street from 6 to 10 p.m. November 14 for a street festival.

Police Chief Roger Tumlinson reported that in October there were two burglaries, one arson of a vehicle, five criminal mischief incidents and five traffic citations among the police department’s work.
