Head Start community fall festival fundraiser

Gift donations

The Jackson/Calhoun County Helping Hands Foster Parents Association is seeking donations to help provide gifts for local foster children. For more information, call Gail Hoskins at 782-5429.

Fall Festival

Port Lavaca #1 Head Start will hold its first Fall Festival fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15 at the fair ground pavilion. The public is welcome to come and enjoy food, games and fun.


Heritage happenings

The Heritage Center (Senior Citizens Center) will host Bingo at 10 a.m., Excel Home health at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 17; crafts and Tai Chi at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19; Health Force Home Health, Thursday, Nov. 20; Tai Chi at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Rosary with Beverly at 10:15 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21. Lunch will be served each day at 11:30 a.m.

Garden Club

The Port Lavaca Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17 in the Bauer Exhibit Building. Designs for Thanksgiving and Christmas will be presented by Devereux Gardens.

Eastern Star #373

Port Lavaca Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17 at the Masonic Lodge Hall on Six Mile Highway. Kim Labay will present a Thanksgiving program. Light refreshments will be served prior to the meeting at 6:30 p.m. All members and visiting members are asked to attend.


Memory screenings

Accolade Home Care is sponsoring confidential memory screenings as part of National Memory Screening Day, a national initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the Victoria Mall. For more information, call 361-293-9099.

Interagency meets

Calhoun County Interagency will meet at noon with lunch being served, Wednesday, Nov. 19 hosted by Hospice of South Texas. Baby pageant

Crossroads Most Beautiful Baby Pageant will be held Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Victoria Mall. For more information, call 576-4425.

Canceled jury

Jury Duty scheduled for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, Calhoun County Justice of the Peace, Precinct #2 has been canceled.

Retired Teachers

The Calhoun County Retired Teachers Association will meet Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Heritage Center. Bethany Bowman, a representative of Texas Cooperative Extension Service, will provide the second part of “Six Ways to Improve Your Mind and Memory” program, All members and prospective members are asked to bring books to be sold for $1 each to provide funds for the annual Book Project.

Fifth grade meeting

HJM Elementary will have a fifth grade parent meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the HJM library. Parents will have a chance to preview the program, “Always Changing, Always Growing” which will be presented to fifth grade students.

Democrats Club

The Calhoun County Democrats Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. for a social followed by a meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20 at IBC Town hall. Vickie Vogel, elected Senatorial District 18 Committeewoman will present a program on the 2008 election experience. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call 552-2791.

Mass/meeting

Our Lady of the Gulf Altar Society will have Mass at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20 for all deceased members followed by a meeting at 7 p.m. at St. Jude hall. All members are asked to attend. New members and guests are welcome.

District No. 6

Calhoun County Drainage District No. 6 will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Calhoun County Agriculture Building.

Ceremony rescheduled

The Flag Retirement Ceremony has been rescheduled to 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21 at Point Comfort Elementary School. Veterans and their families are invited.

Story Time

Calhoun County Library will host Story Time from 11 to 11:45 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21. This week’s topic will be ‘Thanksgiving”. Bring the kids for stories, songs, crafts and fun. For more information, call 552-7323.

Bake sale

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will host a Fall Bake Sale before and after Masses on Saturday, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 23 in front of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. All proceeds will fund high school scholarships. For more information, call 552-6140.

Movie Day

The Calhoun County Library will have Movie Day at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22. Popcorn, pickles and lemonade will be served along with a quick craft and game. Everyone is welcome to join the fun. For more information, call 552-7323. Ext. 25.

Volleyball registration

YMCA adult co-ed volleyball registration will end Monday, Nov. 24. Captains meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26. Season starts Thursday, Dec. 4

Scholarship offered

Calhoun County Farm Bureau is offering a $1000 scholarship to a sophomore, junior or senior student at a Texas college, university or vocational school. Applicants must be a Farm Bureau member or dependant, be at least one-half time with a 2.0 average and have been a resident of Calhoun County for three years. Applications are available at 1601 West Austin. Deadline for submitting is Monday, Nov. 24.

Heart care

The Texas Agrilife Extension Service will sponsor a Heart Smart mail out series for those interested in learning more about cholesterol, saturated and trans fats and other factors related to heart disease. For more information, call Bethany Bowman at 552-9747.

Blood drives

Local blood drives will be held from 9a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Calhoun High School.

Agency/aging counselor

A counselor from the Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging will be available at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at the Port O’Connor Community Center and 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 17 at the Seadrift First Baptist Church. They are also seeking volunteers for the Long Term Care Ombudsmen Program. For more information, call 578-1587.

Eagles Thanksgiving

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is seeking donations ad volunteers to help support the free Thanksgiving Dinner to be held on Thursday, Nov. 27. Tree of Angels

The seventh annual Tree of Angels Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Bauer Community Center. To have a picture of a loved one on display and a personalized candle, call Mary Sue Woods at 552-2091. Everyone is welcome to bring an angel ornament to place on the tree in memory of a victim of a violent crime. A reception and silent auction will follow.

United Way

The United Way of Calhoun County is receiving applications for financial partnerships in 2009. The applicant must be a 501C 3 Non Profit human service organization serving Calhoun County residents. To request an application to become a partner agency of the United Way of Calhoun County call Loretta Brown at 552 3630 or uwcc@tisd.net. The deadline to return applications is Friday, Dec. 5.

Memory Mass

Russell and Cherri Cain have scheduled a mass at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in memory of their Vietnamese friends who lost their lives in a bus accident this summer.

Troop support

IBC Bank and HEB will sponsor Operation Care Drop to support the nation’s troops. The community can support troops by purchasing pre-made care packages at participating HEB stores or travel size supplies and treats, which are capable of fitting into a quart, sized plastic bag. Items can be dropped into the ‘Drop Zone” at any IBC Branch now through Sunday, Nov. 30.

Rifle hunt extended

The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is extending the application period for a Rifle Hunt of white tailed deer and wild hogs. For more information, call 361-286-3559.

Caregiver support

The Family Caregiver Support Group will meet at 10:30 a.m., the second Thursday of every month at First United Methodist Church, 407 N. Bridge, Victoria. For more information, call 576-5553.

Senior workforce

Laptops for checkout

Calhoun County Community Network has laptops available for checkout. Laptops may be rented for $3 a day or $15 for a seven-day week. Testenger has provided free dial-up Internet services for each laptop. Each laptop is equipped with Microsoft Office applications. Some restrictions apply. For more information, contact 553-4301.

Open computer labs

Calhoun County Community Network has open computer labs available to the public free of charge. Labs are open from 4 to at least 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Open lab locations are J/R Elementary, Point Comfort and Seadrift School. Internet access and printing of documents are available. For more information, please call 552-9728 or 553-4301.
