The Travis Middle School and Calhoun High School Science and Spanish Club (SSC)  traveled to the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port Aransas last Friday.

About 40 students and faculty sponsor, Sherrie Krause visited the Lighthouse Lakes Trail Park on Redfish Bay and toured the Aransas Pass Aquatics Center Shrimporee grounds as part of preparing for a future Coastal Expo event for Calhoun County. The SSC students also toured Mustang Island Gulf beaches, the Wetlands Classroom at UTMSI and went on a two hour offshore tour on the UT KATY research vessel to view phytoplankton samples and other marine life. Dolphin sightings were the highlight of the boat tour.

SSC students are participating in NOAA’s National Phytoplankton Monitoring Program and on Tuesday, participated in their first video conferencing programming with Tidehaven Intermediate, Sinton Junior High School, and St. Croix US Virgin Islands Central High School in a live broadcast from the Texas State Aquarium. The Gulf of Mexico Foundation’s Science and Spanish Club Network program is sponsored in part by the Texas General Land Office Coastal Management Program Grant Cycle 12 and 13.
