Eyes with pride
BY AMBER ROKYTA
Way to go, Sandcrabs. What an amazing season y’all are having. I can say that I’ve never been more impressed with the players and the team pride these Sandcrabs exhibit. It’s pride like no other.
For those seniors who will be playing their last football games this season, enjoy every minute of playing time. Remember those moments, because they are ones you’ll look back on someday. Play your heart out, because when you leave, you’re leaving your legacy. For those who will remain behind, play so hard that next season you’ll have to play much harder. To the coaches, the motivation you give players shows so much. The turn-around from years past can clearly be seen.
Mack R. Douglas once said, “The achievement of your goal is assured the moment you commit yourself to it.” That means the moment you decide to step foot on that field and play, your goal is achieved – win or lose.
When returning back home after your last game no matter what happens on the field, whether it’s this Friday or in weeks to come, stand proud and keep your head high, because this town and these fans are so proud of you.
I’ve stood on the sidelines, and I’ve seen the pride in the eyes of the players. I’ve seen the coaches get in their faces and remind them what they’re playing for, encourage them and commend them on all they have done. I’ve seen the players work together and have seen them there to pick up their fallen teammates whether they have fallen in spirit or physically.
When the Sandcrabs played Beeville a few weeks back, it was an intense game – probably one of the most intense games I’ve seen in any sport. I watched a certain player tell his teammates it wasn’t over when the “enemy” got ahead of them. I saw this player tell his teammate to look up and play harder, because they would not be beat again. This player put his helmet back on and wrecked the field. He knocked out players and played like a champion.
High school football is a big deal in Texas, although people in other states don’t understand it. It’s something every true Texan who has ever watched understands. It’s watching your brother, cousin, friend, significant other play and play with pride in their eyes. These Sandcrabs play with the pride in their eyes; they know they are still making history. They are showing those who have come before and who will come after that the bar has been set.
Way to go, Sandcrabs. Good luck this week and in all the games to come. Your destiny awaits you.
