Volunteers needed for Eagles Thanksgiving

Eagles Thanksgiving

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is seeking donations and volunteers to help support the free Thanksgiving Dinner to be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 27. Volunteers are needed to help cook, serve, deliver plates, and cleanup. Those interested in donating items, volunteering or those needing plates delivered should call 552-6591 or e-mail eagles3915@yahoo.com.

Cookbooks

First United Methodist Church Fruit of the Spirit Cookbooks can be purchased  at the church office or by calling 552-7434 or 552-3992.


Student ambassador

A fundraiser for Melanie Abraham, People to People Student Ambassador, from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 22 at Alamo Heights Baptist Church.

Bake sale

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will host a Fall Bake Sale before and after Masses on Saturday, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 23 in front of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. All proceeds will fund high school scholarships. For more information, call 552-6140.

Movie Day

The Calhoun County Library will have Movie Day at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22. Popcorn, pickles and lemonade will be served along with a quick craft and game. Everyone is welcome to join the fun. For more information, call 552-7323. Ext. 25.


“Shug” memorial

The second annual “Shug” Williams Memorial Team roping will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Port Lavaca Rodeo Arena. Books open at noon. Cash only. For more information, call Rudy at 935-0449 or Richard at 920-0800.

Homecoming service

St. Joseph Baptist Church, 811 South Virginia, will host a Family Homecoming Service at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23. Guest speaker will be pastor Frank Harvey, Jr. Everyone is welcome.

Heritage happenings

The Heritage Center (Senior Citizens Center) will host bingo at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 24; crafts and Tai Chi at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Autism support

Parents of Autistic Children support group will meet at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24 at the Port Lavaca Public Library.

Author visits J-R

Author Brenda O’Bannion will read her book, Crowbaby and Dawfie and discussing the writing process at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24 in the J-R Elementary Gym.

Closing ceremonies

Calhoun County Youth Football League closing ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24 at the Bauer Community Center.

Volleyball registration

YMCA adult co-ed volleyball registration will end Monday, Nov. 24. Captains meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26. Season starts Thursday, Dec. 4.

Blood drives

Local blood drives will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Calhoun High School.

Free dinner

Mount Sinai Baptist Church will host its second annual free Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Brown and Brown Fellowship Hall. Turkey and dressing with all the trimmings will be served. The public is welcome.

District No. 10

Calhoun County Drainage District No 10 will meet at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 in the Calhoun County Ag Building.

Clayton’s Angels

Clayton’s Angels are participating in the Port Lavaca Lack’s Trim a Tree Contest this year. To place cans under Clayton’s tree, call Sarah at 550-1883. Proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for research and patient care.

Agency/aging counselor

A counselor from the Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging will be available at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at the Port O’Connor Community Center and 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 17 at the Seadrift First Baptist Church. They are also seeking volunteers for the Long Term Care Ombudsmen Program. For more information, call 578-1587.

DL office closed

The Texas Department of Public Safety Drivers License Office in Port Lavaca will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 26 through Friday, Nov. 28 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Story Time

Calhoun County Public Library will not hold Story Time on Friday, Nov. 28. Story Time will resume on Friday, Dec. 5.

Christian musical

The Goodness of the Lord, a Christian musical with a contemporary worship band based in Ganado, will be held at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 at Assumption Catholic Church in Ganado. Admission is free.

Jackson County ESD-2

Jackson County ESD-2 will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1 at the Carancahua Community Fire Department.

Tree of Angels

The seventh annual Tree of Angels Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Bauer Community Center. To have a picture of a loved one on display and a personalized candle, call Mary Sue Woods at 552-2091. Everyone is welcome to bring an angel ornament to place on the tree in memory of a victim of a violent crime. A reception and silent auction will follow.

Country Opry

The Country Opry will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Heritage Center. Admission is $4. A chicken fried steak dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Donation is $6 a plate. Proceeds will benefit the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Center. For more information, call 552-3350.

Gift donations

The Jackson/Calhoun County Helping Hands Foster Parents Association is seeking donations to help provide gifts for local foster children. For more information, call Gail Hoskins at 782-5429.

United Way

The United Way of Calhoun County is receiving applications for financial partnerships in 2009. The applicant must be a 501C 3 Non Profit human service organization serving Calhoun County residents. To request an application to become a partner agency of the United Way of Calhoun County call Loretta Brown at 552 3630 or uwcc@tisd.net. The deadline to return applications is Friday, Dec. 5.

Scout lock-in

A Girls Scout Lock-In will be held from 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5 to 8 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Victoria Mall. Must be accompanied by a troop leader or adult. For more information, call 573-6451.

Christmas benefit

The tenth annual Christmas Benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at Rita Jo’s Bayview, 1404 Broadway. Cheeseburgers wit all the trimmings will be sold for $6 a plate. Function at the Junction

Festival of Lights, Function at the Junction will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Downtown Depot. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 552-2959 for tickets.

Boat parade

Blue Bonnet Ranch

The Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch Annual Christmas Party will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Grace Episcopal Church. Anyone wishing to donate a gift should bring it to the church pr Coldwell Banker Russell Cain’s office, 2025 North Highway 35.

Memory Mass

Russell and Cherri Cain have scheduled a mass at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in memory of their Vietnamese friends who lost their lives in a bus accident this summer.

Parish Festival

The Catholic Community of Austwell/Tivoli will hold its annual Parish Festival starting at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 14 at Our Lady of the Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tivoli. Homemade chili, chicken noodle soup, sandwiches, desserts and more will be served along with arts and crafts, cake walk, color wheel, live auction, raffle, bingo and more. Look for signs on Highway 35.

Troop support

IBC Bank and HEB will sponsor Operation Care Drop to support the nation’s troops. The community can support troops by purchasing pre-made care packages at participating HEB stores or travel size supplies and treats, which are capable of fitting into a quart, sized plastic bag. Items can be dropped into the ‘Drop Zone” at any IBC Branch now through Sunday, Nov. 30.

YMCA basketball

YMCA is accepting registration for youth basketball for ages five through 14. Call 551-2562 for more information or to sign up.

Caregiver support

The Family Caregiver Support Group will meet at 10:30 a.m., the second Thursday of every month at First United Methodist Church, 407 N. Bridge, Victoria. For more information, call 576-5553.

Laptops for checkout

Calhoun County Community Network has laptops available for checkout. Laptops may be rented for $3 a day or $15 for a seven-day week. Testenger has provided free dial-up Internet services for each laptop. Each laptop is equipped with Microsoft Office applications. Some restrictions apply. For more information, contact 553-4301.

Open computer labs

Calhoun County Community Network has open computer labs available to the public free of charge. Labs are open from 4 to at least 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Open lab locations are J/R Elementary, Point Comfort and Seadrift School. Internet access and printing of documents are available. For more information, please call 552-9728 or 553-4301.
