Barrientos advances to state
Senior Corey Barrientos had set a lofty goal for himself: Finishing his cross country career at the State Meet to be held in Round Rock on Nov. 15. Barrientos blistered the 3.1 mile course at the regional meet in San Antonio, posting a time of 16:13 and finishing sixth which qualified for the state meet. “To move on to the state meet, you must finish in the top 10 individually or one of the top three teams,” said Head Cross Country Coach Kathy Hellums. “Oscar Gaona ran a great race, too, finishing in 13th place with a time of 16:42.”
Both the Calhoun Varsity Boys and Girls teams finished sixth among the 23 teams that were assembled at the regional meet to finish the 2008 season. “I knew that every runner would have to run their very best if the teams were to advance,” added Hellums, “but it just wasn’t our day. Still, congratulations to all of our kids on a great season and good luck to Corey at the state meet.”
