Heritage happenings

The Heritage Center (Senior Citizens Center) will host crafts and Tai Chi at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10; Crossroads Home Health, Thursday, Dec. 11; Tai Chi at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Rosary with Beverly at 10:15 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12; Lunch will be served each day at 11:30 a.m.

Blood drive

Memorial Medical Center will host a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10 in the Community Room.


Live Nativity

First Presbyterian Church, 1111 North Virginia, will host a live Nativity scene from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10 on the front lawn. Cocoa and cookies will be served. Everyone is welcome. 

CCISD Social

Calhoun County Independent School District will host its annual Christmas Social from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Bauer Community Center. All CCISD employees and retired teachers are invited to celebrate the holiday season.

OLG Rosary

Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church Sacred Heart Society will host a Rosary with guest speaker Sister Miriam at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 11. Roses and candles will be for sale. Las Mananitas will be held at 5:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12 at OLG. Breakfast at St. Jude Hall will follow the service.


Radio Association

Port Lavaca Amateur Radio Association will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 11 at First National Bank Community Room.

Christmas Cashination

First Baptist Church Music Ministry will present its Christmas Dinner Theatre at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13. Rib eye steaks with all the trimmings will be served. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. For tickets, call 552-2921 or come by the FBC church office.

Blue Bonnet Ranch

The Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch Annual Christmas Party will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Grace Episcopal Church. Anyone wishing to donate a gift should bring it to the church pr Coldwell Banker Russell Cain’s office, 2025 North Highway 35.

Memory Mass

Russell and Cherri Cain have scheduled a mass at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in memory of their Vietnamese friends who lost their lives in a bus accident this summer.

Christmas concert

First Baptist Church of Port Lavaca will present pianist, Jim Hendricks at 10:15 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 14. Everyone is welcome to come and catch the excitement.

Sandette fundraiser

The Calhoun High School Sandette Drill Team will host a boiling pot fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Bauer Exhibit Building. Plates  are $7 and will consist of ½ pound shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob and bread. Dine in or carryout. There will also be a bake sale, silent auction, kid’s games and pictures. Parish Festival

The Catholic Community of Austwell/Tivoli will hold its annual Parish Festival starting at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 14 at Our Lady of the Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tivoli. Homemade chili, chicken noodle soup, sandwiches, desserts and more will be served along with arts and crafts, cake walk, color wheel, live auction, raffle, bingo and more. Look for signs on Highway 35.

 

Music gift

First Baptist Church Youth will be taking orders to deliver Christmas carols to family and friends through Monday, Dec. 15. Signup sheets are available in the FBC office, outside the sanctuary or by calling 552-2931. Fee for three carols is $7 in town or $10 for surrounding areas. All proceeds will benefit the youth mission trip to Bolivia.

Eastern Star#373

Port Lavaca Chapter #373, Order of the Eastern Star will meet for refreshments of finger foods provided by members at 6:30 p.m., followed by a meeting at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 15 at the Masonic Lodge Hall on Six Mile Highway. The Christmas program consists of bringing non-perishable items or cash donations for the Food Pantry. All members and visiting members are asked to attend.

Democrats Club

The Calhoun County Democrats Club will meet for its annual Holiday party from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the IBC Town Hall. Snacks or finger foods are welcome. Soft drinks and coffee will be provided. Everyone is asked to attend. All are welcome. For information, call 552-2791.

Seadrift choir

Seadrift School students will sing at First National Bank of Seadrift throughout the month of December. Fifth grade will be at 10 a.m. and second grade at 2:45 p.m., Monday, Dec. 15; fourth grade at 10:30 a.m. and Kinder and PM Pre-K at 2:45 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16; Third grade at 9:15 a.m. and the Seadrift School band at 2:45 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17; first grade and AM Pre-K at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 18.

RC Flyers

Mid-Coast RC Flyers will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16 at First National Bank Community Room.

Agency/aging counselor

A counselor from the Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging will be available at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 17 at the Seadrift First Baptist Church. They are also seeking volunteers for the Long Term Care Ombudsmen Program. For more information, call 578-1587.

Live Nativity

Christ Community Church, 1101 Calhoun Street, will host a live Nativity from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17 through Saturday, Dec. 20.

OLG Altar Society

Our Lady of the Gulf Altar Society will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18 at the home of Wanda Roberts. Officers will be elected followed by a Christmas dinner. All members are asked to attend and bring a covered dish to share. New members and guests are welcome.

Little League

Calhoun County Little League Association will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18 at First National Bank Community Room.

Christmas program

Christ Community Church will host a Christmas program, “The Vessels” at 10 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 21. Everyone is welcome to see ancient artifacts from Israel come alive.

Candlelight service

Six Mile Presbyterian Church Candlelight service has been changed from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21. A meal will follow the service. For more information, call 552-2002.

Go Texan Scholarship

The Houston Area Go-Texan Scholarship application is available at Calhoun High School and the Texas Cooperative Extension Office. Scholarship is open to spring 2009 graduating seniors. Application must be turned in by Tuesday, Jan. 13. For more information, contact the CHS counselor’s office or by calling 552-9747.

Diabetes classes

The Calhoun County Extension Office and Memorial Medical Center will begin type two diabetes self care classes on Saturday, Jan. 13. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ag Building. Fee is $20 and includes curriculum and refreshments. For more information or to register, call 552-9747.

Chili Supper

Port Lavaca Evening Lions Club will host its Chili Supper from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Heritage Center. Large bowls of chili, cornbread, beans, cheese, onion and a brownie will be sold for $6. Dine or to go.

Art competition

The Harbor Children’s Alliance and Victim Center will sponsor a Teen Dating Violence Art Competition for grades six through 12. Entrants may use any medium or art form to depict a message against teen dating violence.  Prizes will be awarded.  The top three entrants will be on display at the Calhoun County Library Main Branch for the month of February, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Deadline for entries is Friday, Jan. 30.  For more info contact Beverly Smith at The Harbor, 552-1982. 

Gift donations

The Jackson/Calhoun County Helping Hands Foster Parents Association is seeking donations to help provide gifts for local foster children. For more information, call Gail Hoskins at 782-5429.

First United Methodist Church Fruit of the Spirit Cookbooks can be purchased by at the church office or by calling 552-7434 or 552-3992.

Caregiver support

The Family Caregiver Support Group will meet at 10:30 a.m., the second Thursday of every month at First United Methodist Church, 407 N. Bridge, Victoria. For more information, call 576-5553.

Laptops for checkout

Calhoun County Community Network has laptops available for checkout. Laptops may be rented for $3 a day or $15 for a seven-day week. Testenger has provided free dial-up Internet services for each laptop. Each laptop is equipped with Microsoft Office applications. Some restrictions apply. For more information, contact 553-4301.

Open computer labs

Calhoun County Community Network has open computer labs available to the public free of charge. Labs are open from 4 to at least 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Open lab locations are J/R Elementary, Point Comfort and Seadrift School. Internet access and printing of documents are available. For more information, please call 552-9728 or 553-4301.
