Winder honored
Former Port Lavaca Mayor Allen Tharling joined current Mayor Jack Whitlow Monday to cite retired insurance agent John D. “Buddy” Winder for his service as a volunteer in the community.
Calhoun County Judge Michael Pfeifer also declared Winder Day.
Tharling, when he was mayor of Port Lavaca, introduced the idea of recognizing someone in the community that has performed some service by designating a special day in their honor. For this reason Whitlow said he invited the previous mayor to join him in honoring Winder.
Winder was honored at the Heritage Center in Port Lavaca during National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week was established by President Richard Nixon in 1974.
A proclamation was read recognizing Winder for his many contributions by Mayor Whitlow. Dec. 11 was John D. “Buddy” Winder Day.
Whitlow said Winder has served the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Association for many years.
During Winder’s years of service on the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Board, the resale shop named the Outpost was constructed. It has raised much of the funding for the Heritage Center used by the entire community for special events.
For over 20 years Winder worked with the other seniors towards the development of the senior citizens complex off Austin-Alcoa streets. He helped solicit funding for the complex, did physical labor and found supplies as the resale shop and Heritage Center was being built.
Winder raised $50,000 for the seniors by selling commemorative bricks.
The Calhoun County Senior Citizens gave Winder a plaque at the annual Thanksgiving dinner.
Winder was honored during the 35th anniversary of volunteer week.
