Victim still in coma
BY CHARLYN FINN
Thomas MaHoney of Victoria, one of two occupants in a pickup truck who were severely injured in an accident at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, remained in a coma Wednesday at University Hospital of San Antonio.
Bonnie Hamlin, mother of MaHoney, said her son remained unchanged in a coma in the hospital intensive care unit.
She said a procedure was done to MaHoney’s brain to try to get him to respond. She said her son was the driver of the pickup truck and it is believed that the fracture to his rib cage was caused by the steering wheel. He also suffered trauma to his thoracic diaphragm, a sheet of muscle extending across the bottom of the ribcage that separates the thoracic cavity.
The passenger in the vehicle, Robert Bevins of Port Lavaca, remained in the intensive care unit of Citizens Medical Center on Wednesday morning. He was awaiting surgery for many fractures and a broken vertebra.
The occupant of the other vehicle driven by Samantha Koch, suffered only scratches even though the impact of the truck severed her vehicle, according to DPS Trooper James Burdette. She was treated and released from Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca.
The collision that is still under investigation occurred when the pickup on TX 185 did not stop at the traffic signal, according to Burdette. It struck Koch’s gold passenger car northbound on TX 35, proceeded across the highway and went into a field where both truck passengers were ejected.
Koch’s vehicle was hit from behind the passenger front seat and was “split in three major pieces,” according to Burdette.
Bevins from his hospital bed on Tuesday said he and MaHoney had gone to Seadrift to visit his brother.
“The woman in that vehicle walked away from it,” said Dan Chapman, an eyewitness. “The vehicle was severed completely just missing the front and the woman in it walked away uninjured. If I was there 20 or 30 seconds later, I would have been in the accident.”
Traffic occupied Sheriff office deputies for an hour.
Calhoun County Emergency Medical Service transported the accident victims to the hospitals.
The accident is still under investigation.
