TPWD scoping meeting Thursday

Committee position

The Community Action Committee of Victoria has one at-large position open in Calhoun County. CACVT administers funds for Weatherization, Neighborhood Services, and the Family Outreach Program to an eleven county service area. Those interested in serving on the board should contact Vicki Smith at 578-2989 or 1-800-365-7712 by Friday, Jan. 16.

Library closed

The Calhoun County Library will be closed now through early to mid February for renovations. Patrons are encouraged to use the Point Comfort Branch library. For more information, call 552-7323.


GT nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for Calhoun County Independent School District’s Gifted and Talented Program. Nomination forms are available at any CCISD school. Completed forms must be returned to the student’s home campus on or before Friday, Jan. 30. Qualifying students will be eligible for services in the 2009-2010 school year. Kindergarten students will receive services beginning in March 2009. For more information, contact a CCISD school counselor.

MLK Day

Donations and sponsorships for the third annual Martin Luther King Celebration to be held on Saturday, Jan. 17 are being sought. Those interested should contact CCIA, 905 south Virginia or call Emma at 552-3433.

Country Opry

The Heritage Center and Sterling Griffith will present the Country Opry at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6. Admission is $4. A brisket and sausage dinner will be served at 6 p.m. for a $6 donation. Proceeds will benefit the Calhoun County Senior Citizens. For more information, call 552-3350.


Heritage happenings

The Heritage Center (Senior Citizens Center) will host crafts at 9 a.m., Exercise with Susie at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7; Crossroads Home Health, Thursday, Jan. 8; Rosary with Beverly at 10:15 a.m., Friday, Jan. 9; Lunch will be served each day at 11:30 a.m.

Bay Gun Club

The Bay Gun Club will meet at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the First National Bank Community Room.

Fishing regulations

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Coastal Fisheries Division will be hosting a series of coastwide public scoping meetings to discuss potential changes to existing fishery regulations. TPWD is considering changes in the current flounder, shark and reef fish regulations.  All interested should attend the meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8 at the Calhoun County Extension Service Bauer Building.

Veteran’s benefits

Trinity Shores of Port Lavaca will host an informational presentation regarding Veterans benefits and pensions (such as for Assisted Living and Nursing Homes) plus other services provided through the Veterans Service Office at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8.  Joe Pena, Calhoun County Veterans Service Officer and Philip McGuill, Veterans Assistance Counselor for The Texas Veterans Commission from Victoria will present the program.  The public is welcome to attend.  For more information, call Cynthia at Trinity Shores at 552-2333.

Radio Club

The Port Lavaca Amateur Radio Club will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8 at the First National Bank Community Room.

KC Free Throw

The Knights of Columbus Council  #3253 will sponsor a basketball Free Throw contest for boys and girls, ages 10 through 14, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 11 at the Travis Middle School gym. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. For more information, call Rolando Reyes, Jr. at 552-5474.

Investment Club

The Calhoun County Investment Club will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12 at the First National Bank Community Room.

Youth Rodeo

The Calhoun County Youth Rodeo will meet at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the First National Bank Community Room.

Go Texan Scholarship

The Houston Area Go-Texan Scholarship application is available at Calhoun High School and the Texas Cooperative Extension Office. Scholarship is open to spring 2009 graduating seniors. Application must be turned in by Tuesday, Jan. 13. For more information, contact the CHS counselor’s office or by calling 552-9747.

Diabetes classes

The Calhoun County Extension Office and Memorial Medical Center will begin type two diabetes self care classes on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ag Building. Fee is $20 and includes curriculum and refreshments. For more information or to register, call 552-9747.

Conservative Club

The Calhoun County Conservative Club will hold its regular monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan.  13 at the Heritage Center. Trish Ritthaler, Dow public affairs manager, will speak about the anticipated drawdowns in Calhoun County.  The public is welcome to attend.

Spelling Bee

Calhoun County Kiwanis Club will host its first Adult Spelling Bee at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Calhoun High School Auditorium. For more information, contact any Kiwanis Club member or call Donna at 552-7872 or Texas Real Estate of Port Lavaca at 552-2927.

Blood drive

Memorial Medical Auxiliary will host a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14 in the MMC Community Room. Free tee shirt to each donor. Anyone 17 years or older in good general health may donate. For more information, call 552-2231.

Heritage dance

The Heritage Center (Senior Citizen’s Center) will host a dance from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16 with music by The Classics. The $5 cover charge includes chicken and dumplings while they last. For more information, call 552-3350.

MLK celebration

The third annual Martin Luther King Celebration will be held Sat., Jan. 17 beginning with a march at 10 a.m. at Evelyn’s Fish Market and ending at George Adams Park. There will be lots of free food and drinks, fun, and local talent. Guest speaker will be motivational speaker, Rev. Rufus C. Diggs of Houston. The public is welcome to attend.

Retired teachers meet

The Calhoun County Retired Teachers Association will meet Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Heritage Center.  Patti Fitzpatrick, activity coordinator, will explain to members all that the Heritage Center provides for the community. All members and prospective members are to bring books to the meeting that will be sold for $1 each to provide funds for the annual Book Project.

Cemetery association

The annual meeting of the Port Lavaca Cemetery Association will be held at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 in the IBC Bank Town hall meeting room. All members are welcome to attend.

Interagency meets

Calhoun County Interagency will meet at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the Ag Building, 186 CR 101. Bethany Bowman, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences with Texas Agrilife Extension Service in Calhoun County will present a program on the various educational programs and services she offers as part of the County Extension staff. For more information or to RSVP, call Cynthia Bozarth at 552-2333 or email Cynthia@trinitycare.com. Class of 1979

The Calhoun High School Class of 1979 will have a planning meeting for its 30-year class reunion at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23 at the Greenhouse Lounge. Classmates are asked to attend.

Sandies reunion

Varsity Sandies from 1965 through 1978 will host a reunion in honor of Janette Barlow from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Dow Clubhouse. All Varsity Sandies should contact Allene Hunt at 552-2600 or email Thepharmacy@cableone.net.

Art competition

The Harbor Children’s Alliance and Victim Center will sponsor a Teen Dating Violence Art Competition for grades six through 12. Entrants may use any medium or art form to depict a message against teen dating violence.  Prizes will be awarded.  The top three entrants will be on display at the Calhoun County Library Main Branch for the month of February, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Deadline for entries is Friday, Jan. 30.  For more info contact Beverly Smith at The Harbor, 552-1982.

Caregiver support

The Family Caregiver Support Group will meet at 10:30 a.m., the second Thursday of every month at First United Methodist Church, 407 N. Bridge, Victoria. For more information, call 576-5553.

Laptops for checkout

Calhoun County Community Network has laptops available for checkout. Laptops may be rented for $3 a day or $15 for a seven-day week. Testenger has provided free dial-up Internet services for each laptop. Each laptop is equipped with Microsoft Office applications. Some restrictions apply. For more information, contact 553-4301.

Open computer labs

Calhoun County Community Network has open computer labs available to the public free of charge. Labs are open from 4 to at least 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Open lab locations are J/R Elementary, Point Comfort and Seadrift School. Internet access and printing of documents are available. For more information, please call 552-9728 or 553-4301.
