PD makes drug busts

A traffic stop in Port Lavaca city limits Friday resulted in a drug bust and the arrest  of Steven Christopher Moreno, 18, of Port Lavaca.

Police Chief John Stewart said Moreno was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by the traffic officer.  The officer smelled burning marijuana. After a search Ecstasy pills were found in Moreno’s pocket. He was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Christopher Lee Casey, 26, of Liberty was observed outside a local bar on Sunday. Stewart said police officers saw Casey trying to hide from them and when approached he ran and threw his crack pipe over the fence along with a very small amount of crack cocaine. He was caught and arrested.

He was charged with possession of crack cocaine.

Due to recent concerns about drugs coming across the Mexican border and being trafficked through Texas towns, Stewart was asked if he thought this problem represented most of the local drug arrests.

“No, “ he replied. ”Most of our arrests by far are for small amounts of drugs and are locals. The arrests are usually made on traffic stops, calls of disturbances involving the people who are under the influence of drugs, or suspicious activity as related in one of the incidents over the weekend.”
