Mandi Haynes was admittedly nervous last week.
The Port O’Connor resident served as a first-time counselor at the Texas Baptist Encampment in Palacios. She was not originally slated to serve at the camp, but did so when a counselor scheduled to attend was unable to because of an illness.
Despite the original nervousness, Haynes said that everything went smoothly and that she enjoyed herself thoroughly.
“I really loved just getting to see the kids learn about God, and getting to learn more about him myself”, Haynes said.
Haynes, 19, along with Grant Raymond, a math teacher at Travis Middle School, chaperoned the youth group for four days. Haynes said she returned with many wonderful memories.
The theme for the Texas Baptist Encampment this year was titled ‘Joy Ride.’ It included a large array of tie-dye clothing, with peace signs emblazoned upon posters, clothing and foreheads alike.
The Palacios camp has been an ongoing tradition for the Baptist church in Port O’ Connor. The camp features live music, games and many other activities.
As a first-time counselor, Haynes was required to complete a safety test, which is now required by the state. She was also required to view a counselor training video.
Haynes has finished her counseling duties for the summer, and looks forward to returning to school at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Haynes said she would gladly counsel again if given the chance.
