Calhoun Sandcrabs

Calhoun County Independent School District announced Monday via press release that the varsity football team will forfeit its win last Friday due to a violation of UIL rules.

In the press release, the Sandcrabs had an ineligible player on the field during the first half of the Alice game last Friday. According to Sandcrabs Head Coach Richard Whitaker, the player was ejected from the Gregory-Portland game a week earlier due to an altercation with a GP player.

Whitaker stated he did not receive any paperwork from UIL regarding the incident and the punishment the player will receive.

Whitaker said he contacted the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) Corpus Christi Chapter about the incident, and he added that they didn’t file the report and asked what should happen to the player.

“I was told by the Corpus TASO Chapter that it will follow local policy, which means it is our decision, so we played him," Whitaker said.

Whitaker added local policy is not the UIL rules, and under the rules, the player cannot play in the first half.

“I made the mistake of not calling the UIL and following up on what had happened," Whitaker said.

Whitaker went over the process of dealing with suspended players, and he said TASO must send the incident report to the UIL and, by Monday, he’ll have the paperwork sent by the UIL.

“TASO certainly did not do their job, but it’s not their responsibility to follow UIL rules. It is my responsibility," Whitaker said.

Whitaker will address his team about the forfeit and how they’ll move on from it.

“You tell your kids all the time, that in life when you mess up, you have to face your adversities that you have done,” Whitaker said.

Whitaker added that nobody will take away his players' tremendous effort from last Friday’s game.

The forfeit will not define the Sandcrabs season, Whitaker said. He added this is just a bump in the road they’ll get through.

Calhoun’s plans to win-out the remainder of the season, Whitaker said. And the plans are to play for the district title against Calallen at home.

“We can take care of our own destiny, and everything is in our control right now,” Whitaker said. “I created an obstacle for us, and we got to get through it and overcome it.”

Currently, the stats from last week's game still stand, according to Whitaker.

Sandcrabs Fullback Steve Johnson became Calhoun’s all-time career rushing leader and rushed for a single-game record for 358 yards on 32 attempts and scored four touchdowns.

The Sandcrabs will travel to Tuloso-Midway this Friday to take on the Warriors.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
