Texas Parks and Wildlife released a press release last Monday announcing Free Fishing Day Saturday, June 1.

According to the press release the TPW offers free fishing on the first Saturday of June to kick off fishing and boat week and it added on this day fishers can fish on any public waterbody in the state for free without a fishing license.

One man from Victoria took the opportunity to fish for free at Lighthouse Beach last Saturday with his family.

Roger Jeffery, 68, of Victoria, said he has never fished in the ocean before, and he added “it’s great” that TPW has a free fishing day.

“I wish they had it for seniors like over 65 that you can fish for free without a license,” Jeffery said.

Jeffery has been fishing for 55 years, and he said the one thing that he likes about fishing is the anticipation and wait for the big one.

Jeffery didn’t come alone Saturday morning, his daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren came with him to go fishing.
