STAFF REPORT
The races for the May 6 municipal elections are set, and a couple of deadlines are on the horizon.
There are contested races for the Port Lavaca City Council, Seadrift City Council, Point Comfort City Council, and the Calhoun Port Authority. There are no opposed races for the Calhoun County ISD Board.
April 6 is the deadline to register to vote in the election. Residents can register at the Calhoun County Elections Office, 211 Ann St., or the Texas Secretary of State website.
Early voting is set to start on April 24 and will run through May 2.
Residents can currently request ballots by mail, and the deadline is April 25. The last day to return it for counting is May 6.
PORT LAVACA
District 1 and District 3 seats are up for election in this cycle.
Daniel Aguirre and Mike McGuire have filed to run for the District 1 seat. Incumbent Jerry Smith decided not to run for re-election.
Allen Tippit Jr., who currently holdsDistrict 3seat, has filed for re-election and is running unopposed.
SEADRIFT
Three seats are open on the Seadrift council, currently held by Tracey Johnson, Kenneth Reese, and Geoff Hunt. If more than three candidates file, the top three vote-getters are elected to the council.
Reese, Johnson, and Hunt have filed for re-election. Howard Heath Sr. also has filed to run.
POINT COMFORT
Three seats are up on the council, which are currently held by councilwomen Kelli Hynes, Laura Kurtz, and Councilman Wes McKelvy. All three incumbents have filed for re-election, as have John Warren and Cary Kneupper.
The top three vote-getters will be elected to the council.
PORT AUTHORITY
The Port Authority has three seats open this election cycle, which are District 2, currently held by Jay Cuellar; District 3, currently held by J.C. Melcher; and District 4, held by Luis De La Garza.
Melcher has drawn an opponent for District 3. Justin Weaver has filed to run for the seat.
Incumbents De La Garza and Cuellar have filed for re-election. During its recent meeting, the Calhoun Port Authority Board certified the District 2 and District 4 races as unopposed.
CCISD
Three seats are up this election cycle on the school board – District 1, held by Dominic Robles; District 2, held by Vinson Phillips, who is running for his first full term after being appointed to the board; and District 6, which is currently held by John Foester.
Lori Leal has filed to run for District 6.
