National Voter Registration Day will be celebrated in Calhoun County Sept. 24 at the Calhoun County Library in Port Lavaca.

The event is part of a 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November.

“Calhoun County Elections Office, along with the Calhoun County Library, would encourage the public to come out and register to vote or if already registered they are encouraged to come out and update information,” stated Mary Orta, Elections Administrator, in an email.

The effort is to increase voter participation and residents can stop by either at the library or the Calhoun County Courthouse lobby to register or update their information.

Registration crews will be at the library, 200 W. Mahan St., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and there will be a registration booth in the courthouse lobby from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. People can also register online at or on the national website,

With local elections happening soon, every eligible American voter should exercise his or her right to be heard at the ballot box this year and next, according to the press release.

National Voter Registration Day is the right place to start by getting registered. Thousands of national, state, local organizations and volunteers will be the driving force behind National Voter Registration Day 2019, the release stated. Partner organizations will coordinate hundreds of National Voter Registration Day events nationwide and on all social media platforms to drive attention to voter registration and the midterm election.

According, the day was first observed in 2012 and has been growing since. It is the fourth Tuesday of September and has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State and supported by the National Association of State Election Directors, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, and the National Association of Election Officials.
