The community of Seadrift and the chamber of commerce celebrated the 243rd birthday of these United States Thursday, July 4, at Bayfront Park.

The city’s chamber of commerce hosted the Independence Day festivities with Bubba’s Cajun Style Seafood providing the fireworks show at Bill Sanders Memorial Park.

The chamber had many activities from cornhole tossing, watermelon eating, pie eating, seed spitting, etc.

Chamber President Cindy Alford said the turnout was amazing and added that a great group of people turned out for the festivities.

According to Alford, the chamber didn’t host a Fourth of July celebration last year.

Alford said that it’s great and amazing to have Seadrift participate in the Fourth of July event, and she added they have something for the folks.

The event also attracted people from outside Seadrift. Steve Lahey, of La Salle, was able to spend time with his grandkids and see what activities the event offered.

“I had a great time with the watermelon, pie eating and all of the contests,” Lahey said. “I liked the parade, and my granddaughter did a great job.”

The night was capped off with a fireworks show at Bill Sanders Park presented by Bubba’s Cajun Style Seafood restaurant.

Owner Bubba Hall said he enjoys shooting off fireworks for the whole community, and he added it draws people into town.

A lot of people parked their vehicles at the park to enjoy the fireworks display. Hall said it was thrilling to see the reactions of the people when the fireworks are launched.

“That’s why I keep doing it...it has become a real big deal,” he said.
