The Calhoun Sandies volleyball opened district play with a win on the road against Victoria East, Tuesday, August 27.
Calhoun knocked out the Titans in four sets and helped get its head coach, Jenna Buzek her first win of the season.
Buzek said it felt awesome and added that everything in the preseason led up to this moment.
“District is what counts, and so to get this win was awesome, and yes it would be awesome to win three,” Buzek said.
She added that East came out firing in sets three and four, and she couldn’t take anything away from them.
Buzek got a chance to see the preseason work pay off as Jacy Hroch dominated the front with five blocks and eight kills. Paige Weaver, Rosie Orta, and Reggie Fredrick recorded double-digit digs, Cassie Lane had 12 assists, and Savanna Lane served five aces.
“I’ve seen that team a couple of times [in the preseason],” Buzek said. “But it is usually up and down, and I told them [her players] if that team comes in to play it’s a whole different story.”
Hroch talked about her performance and how the team worked together.
“It was pretty good, cause we’re working together to make sure everything was perfect, and that made everything much better,” Hroch said.
Hroch added that it felt good to get that first district win for her coach.
Buzek talked about her team’s defensive blocks and how important they were during the game.
“That is your first line of defense, and the defense passing in the back is your second line, Buzek said.
Buzek added those are game-changers when someone gets the ball down on a block, and she said that gives her team momentum and excitement.
The Sandies will take on Corpus Christi Carroll for their home opener Tuesday, September 3, and Friday, September 7, they’ll battle Corpus Christi King on the road.
Tuesday’s game starts at 6 p.m. and Friday’s at 5 p.m.
