The Calhoun Sandies Volleyball will close out their non-district matches this week and shift its focus to the district opener against Victoria East.

Jenna Buzek, the Sandies head coach, said it is “crazy” that her team is about to start district.

“We are going to focus on it [district play] this week,” Buzek said. “But we got to get in their minds that district is starting, and this is where it counts, so we got to start going.”

Buzek will take on the Corpus Christi teams for the first time in her coaching career, and she said her team will face them like any other team.

“I don’t know much about them, and I saw a couple of them [play] at the last tournament we were at,” Buzek said.

Buzek added until her team faces them for the first time she’ll get a lot of input and advice from her players who played the Corpus teams last season.

Calhoun will take on familiar faces in district from Victoria West, Veterans Memorial and Carrol, who were playoff teams last year.

Buzek said her team will do the best that they can against these three teams, and she added they’ll learn from these teams and come up with a game plan to beat them.

Buzek got a chance to see her team improve in last weekend’s Sinton Tournament, and she said a lot of things in practice her players have been using in the games.

“I just told them how exciting, and how awesome it is that they are picking up these things and they are using it,” Buzek said.

Buzek added that last weekend was really good for the Sanies, and as long as they do that, the only thing to do is to go up.

Buzek is looking forward to just getting it going in district play, and she added that district is always nerve racking because this is where it counts.

“I’m just ready to get going and get playing, and getting some wins under our belt.” Buzek said.

The Sandies will tip off district play in Victoria against Victoria East.
