Sandies take third place

The Calhoun Sandie Volleyball team went 1-1 in their second Tri-Match of the season Tuesday, August 13, at home.

In the first match, the Sandies fell to Floresville in a three-game sweep.

Cayori Williams had seven kills and six blocks, Paige Weaver hustled and was credited with 11 digs and earned three aces, and Rosie Orta recorded eight assists.

Jenna Buzek, the Sandies head coach, said the team started off slow in the opening match against Floresville, and she added there were a lot of communication errors that brought the team down.

In the Sandies in the second match, Buzek said her team played a lot better against Rockport.

Calhoun rebounded in its second tri-match with a three-game sweep of Rockport, and Buzek said her girls talked a lot and hustled to raise their level of play.

Weaver and Orta hustled in the second game with eight digs each, Weaver also led with six aces, and Williams dominated Rockport with nine kills and four blocks.

--Sinton Tournament—

The Calhoun Sandies finished 5-1 in the Sinton Tournament over the weekend and took home third place overall.

The Sandies swept three teams in five of their games and beat Harlingen South and Ed Couch Elsa.

Calhoun’s only loss was against Flour Bluff in two sets.

Calhoun will play their last non-district game Tuesday night against Calallen on the road and will play its last tournament in the Goliad Varsity Tournament Thursday, August 22 to 24.

The Calallen game starts at 6 p.m., and the Goliad tournament time is TBA.
