Mittie Eloise Bennetsen, 79, beloved wife, sister, aunt and true disciple of Christ, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of June 28, 2025. Mittie was born on March 20, 1946 in Seadrift to Hallie and Ruth Walker Gaines, and was married to her loving husband, Rex, for 45 years.
Mittie attended Seadrift school and graduated from Calhoun High School in 1964. Mittie was a foster mother for many years, and all of her numerous nieces and nephews considered her to be their second wonderful mom. Mittie loved helping people and doing for others, and her desire was for people to learn of Jesus Christ, and she loved and served God with her entire heart and soul. Mittie never met a writing ink pen that she didn't like, and collected them by the dozens in her secretary and clerical profession, and after retiring. Mittie also thoroughly enjoyed sending all types of cards in the mail for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations. . . you name the occasion and she was sending a card for it. Mittie's very favorite flowers were the tulips, and she loved watching and admiring the beautiful cardinal birds. Mittie Eloise was also a true foodie, wanting to try different cuisines at all the restaurants wherever she and Rex happened to be, and she loved watching Western shows on TV. Mittie brought immeasurable joy to those that knew her, and she will truly be missed. . . heaven benefits as Mittie begins her new and glorious life.
Mittie is survived by her husband, Rex, her sister, Lottie Frank of Victoria, and brother, Eldon (Peggy) Gaines of Seadrift, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mittie was preceded in death by her sister, Naomi Ruth Ross, and brothers, Homer Gaines and Lester "Doc" Gaines.
A Memorial Service for Mittie will be held at the Beacon of Hope church (formerly First Assembly of God), 4205 N. Ben Jordan in Victoria, on Saturday, July 19, at 10:00am, with Pastor George Kutach and former Pastor Randy Franklin, officiating. A private family burial will later be held at Seadrift Cemetery with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Grace Funeral Home in Victoria. A special Thank You to the wonderful people of Hospice of South Texas.
